Why did they call them death panels?

People made a big deal about so called "Death Panels" for a while. But as stated they are not death panels. They are simply saying that you have a choice in euthanasia, but these are the last things the government will provide for you. So they are not death panels at all, just a cut off point for medical care under the healthcare plan. Maybe it was to divert attention from the truth. Anyone?
