Why did south carolina oppose high tariffs in the 1800s?

The tariffs were on imported goods. South Carolina was agricultural, having no major industry. US industry at the time was far behind Britain and the British could make and sell stuff cheaper than their American competitors. Tariffs were essentially a tax on imports, raising their price to the buyer. The tariffs were established as a way to support American manufacturers by making the price of their goods competitive with British products, moving money to US producers. This allowed American factories to increase and improve, but South Carolina had to pay a higher price for its imports. This did not make them happy.
