Does my dog have kennel cough?

I went away over Christmas so had to put my west highland terrier 'Darkie' in kennels. Now since we collected him he has had a persistent barking cough. Taking him to the vets would be time consuming and an expense I could do without - will this ailment clear up on it's own?
